"Laser Engineer: The Unexpected Virtue of Being Multidisciplinary"

Abstract

At the undergraduate level, engineering students are required to take a diverse set of coursework, and they often lack the foresight to see the relevance. As students move into their careers, the skills they developed are called upon, and often necessity forces them to develop new skills. This presentation will explore the path taken by a laser engineer, and how Electrical Engineering was merely a foundation for a career. Success required continued education and collaboration in computer science, manufacturing, and engineering management. Laser projects will be highlighted as a framework for a multidisciplinary approach to research.

Career Summary

Dr. Ben Campbell earned a BS in Physics and MS in EE at Penn State before getting his PhD in Engineering at Robert Morris University. He was formerly a laser engineer for the Penn State Electro-Optics Center and is now an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Robert Morris University near Pittsburgh.
